A CompCertTSO: A Verified Compiler for Relaxed-Memory Concurrency
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we consider the semantic design and verified compilation of a C-like programming language for concurrent shared-memory computation on x86 multiprocessors. The design of such a language is made surprisingly subtle by several factors: the relaxed-memory behavior of the hardware, the effects of compiler optimization on concurrent code, the need to support high-performance concurrent algorithms, and the desire for a reasonably simple programming model. In turn, this complexity makes verified compilation both essential and challenging. We describe ClightTSO, a concurrent extension of CompCert’s Clight in which the TSO-based memory model of x86 multiprocessors is exposed for high-performance code, and CompCertTSO, a formally verified compiler from ClightTSO to x86 assembly language, building on CompCert. CompCertTSO is verified in Coq: for any well-behaved and successfully compiled ClightTSO source program, any permitted observable behavior of the generated assembly code (if it does not run out of memory) is also possible in the source semantics. We also describe some verified fence-elimination optimizations, integrated into CompCertTSO.

Verifying Fence Elimination Optimisations
We consider simple compiler optimisations for removing redundant memory fences in programs running on top of the x86-TSO relaxed memory model. While the optimisations are performed using standard thread-local control flow analyses, their correctness is subtle and relies on a non-standard global simulation argument. The implementation and the proof of correctness are programmed in Coq as part of...
متن کاملVerifying Optimizations for Concurrent Programs
While program correctness for compiled languages depends fundamentally on compiler correctness, compiler optimizations are not usually formally verified due to the effort involved, particularly in the presence of concurrency. In this paper, we present a framework for stating and reasoning about compiler optimizations and transformations on programs in the presence of relaxed memory models. The ...
متن کاملVerified Compilation for Shared-Memory C
We present a new architecture for specifying and proving optimizing compilers in the presence of shared-memory interactions such as buffer-based system calls, shared-memory concurrency, and separate compilation. The architecture, which is implemented in the context of CompCert, includes a novel interaction-oriented model for C-like languages, and a new proof technique, called logical simulation...
متن کاملMemory Model Safety of Programs
Concurrency is pervasive in all systems software, including operating systems, databases, and web servers. With the future hardware performance improvements coming mainly from additional parallelism in the hardware, system designers will be forced make their programs more concurrent to exploit this trend. A particular problem that programmers face when writing concurrent programs is to ensure c...
متن کاملA machine-checked, type-safe model of Java concurrency: language, virtual machine, memory model, and verified compiler
Klein and Nipkow’s formalisation Jinja [83] of a Java-like programming language was the first that unifies source code, bytecode, and a compiler, is executable, and has been shown type safe – with Isabelle/HOL [128] having mechanically checked all definitions and proofs. In this thesis, I extend Jinja to JinjaThreads with concurrency in the form of Java threads and the Java memory model (JMM). ...
